For the past two weeks in Italy, a lake has been transformed with floating piers that allow visitors to walk on water. Christo and Jeanne-Claude later found Lake Iseo to be the most inspiring location to realize this project. The lake’s water, the landscape, and the communities around it have all been part of The Floating Piers. The Floating Piers at Lake Iseo, Italy, is Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s first large-scale project since they realized The Gates in 2005. It consists of a modular floating dock walkway, 16 meters wide and 35 centimeters high, covered in yellow-gold fabric, and running across Lake Iseo from the shore settlement of Sulzano to the islands of Monte Isola and San Paolo.

The floating walkways are “The Floating Piers”, the project presented by Christo and Germano Celant at MAXXI in Rome in April 2015. Systematica is involved in “The Floating Piers” firstly in coordination with Arup, for the feasibility study of the Project and its technical organisation, and then as independent firm, for the development of the Multi-modal Accessibility Plan.

The first image from 19 April shows the lake’s Monte Isola (island), but as time progresses the floating dock takes form and, in the final image from 21 June, is covered with yellow fabric.
