In 1920, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature for the epic, Growth of the Soil. Growth of the Soil (Norwegian Markens Grøde), is a novel by Knut Hamsun which won him the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1920. It follows the story of a man who settles and lives in rural Norway. First published in 1917, it has since been translated from Norwegian into languages such as English. The latter is counterbalanced in other Hamsun works, such as Mysteries (Mysterier, 1892) and Growth of the Soil (Markens Grøde, 1920), which earned him the Nobel prize in literature but also brought about claims of his being a proto-National Socialist Blut und Boden author.

Knut Hamsun (1859-1952), pseudonym of Knud Pedersen, was one of the most important writers of Norway and one of the three Norwegian Nobel Prize 

He had been a candidate for the prize with the same novel in 1919, but on that occasion it went to the Swiss writer Carl Spitteler, for Olympischer Frühling (1906).In his speech to the winner the chairman of the Nobel committee, Harald Hjärne, made it clear that, of all Hamsun’s works What am I to do in the presence of such gracious, such overwhelming generosity?
